Pontoon will ease Maktoum bridge traffic

Dubai: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated three major projects.

The Dh300 million ventures include the new floating bridge linking the two banks of Dubai Creek, the waterbus project and the new articulated buses.

These projects are aimed at improving Dubai's road, traffic and transport services to cope with the city's rapid growth.

Shaikh Mohammad attended a ceremony organised by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Sunday.

Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Deputy Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, and other shaikhs, dignitaries and prominent figures from the business community attended it.

Shaikh Mohammad also inaugurated the new commuter bus project, which is expected to ease traffic jams.

He watched a documentary on the RTA's achievements regarding the development of the road network.

While attending the glittering ceremony, which included fireworks, Shaikh Mohammad viewed the operation of the new water bus which marks the start of the service.

He also inspected a new articulated bus, one of a fleet of 80 buses - single and bi-articulated buses, which are run and managed by the RTA as part of its integrated plan to revamp mass transport.

He also inspected kiosks set up for bus users.

Shaikh Mohammad expressed his satisfaction at this vital accomplishment and other achievements made by the RTA to ease traffic jams and offer all possible means to the public to enjoy security and stability.

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman and Chief Executive of the RTA, said the floating bridge will help to reduce traffic jams by 37 per cent on Al Maktoum Bridge, over which more than 150,000 vehicles pass each day.

The floating bridge, a first-of-its-kind project in the UAE, is built out of 20-metre-wide hollow concrete blocks that will float on water.

Trips to cost Dh4

The bridge stretches across the surface intersection near Deira City Centre and Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, and ends at the intersection to be built on Riyadh Street between the Dubai Courts and the Creek Park.

It provides an additional link between Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road and Oud Metha Road from one side and Al Ittihad Road and Deira from the other.

The floating bridge will be open from 6am to 10pm daily and is considered a temporary solution until the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) completes the design and construction of a permanent bridge in the same place.

Al Tayer said the water bus project includes 10 buses in the first phase at a total cost of Dh7 million. Each bus can accommodate 36 passengers.

The ten water buses, manufactured locally, will operate on four commuter service routes and one tourist route.

The tourist service route will extend from Al Shindagha station to Al Seef station and cost Dh25 for each person for the 25-minute trip.

A one-way trip across the creek will cost Dh4 which is a temporary price.

Al Tayer said there are 80 buses, 51 of which are bi-articulated and 29 are single articulated at a cost of Dh148 million.
